Why is Auburn the Prison City?

Auburn, NY was the site for the 2nd New York state prison with building beginning in 1817.  The Auburn Correctional Facility is still here today and employs over 800 people.  It is a part of Auburn's history with the instituting of the electric chair and a form of inmate management called the Auburn System. Now, did you know, prison tourism is very popular all over the world?  I'm not in a hurry to check out any old, scary fortresses but some people may be attracted to these reformed museums.   If you want a "taste" of the prison, you can admire the electric chair on display at Saby's Tavern on South St.  Swaby's definitely has a lot of memorabilia from the early days of Auburn: street signs, letters written to city officials, photos, and advertising from the former entertainment establishments.  If you're looking for paleo fare like I do, Wednesday is $6 burger night (without the bun, of course).  When you don't mind a little jump in ca
