Why is Auburn the Prison City?

Auburn, NY was the site for the 2nd New York state prison with building beginning in 1817.  The Auburn Correctional Facility is still here today and employs over 800 people.

It is a part of Auburn's history with the instituting of the electric chair and a form of inmate management called the Auburn System.

Now, did you know, prison tourism is very popular all over the world?  I'm not in a hurry to check out any old, scary fortresses but some people may be attracted to these reformed museums.

If you want a "taste" of the prison, you can admire the electric chair on display at Saby's Tavern on South St.

Swaby's definitely has a lot of memorabilia from the early days of Auburn: street signs, letters written to city officials, photos, and advertising from the former entertainment establishments.

If you're looking for paleo fare like I do, Wednesday is $6 burger night (without the bun, of course).  When you don't mind a little jump in carb count, you can add a baked potato to your steak.

A few blocks away, getting closer to the Auburn prison on State Street is the Prison City Pub and Brewery. I am not a fan of beer, but Prison City has won numerous awards for their microbrews.  The carb count for many craft beers range from 15-25 grams per glass, so I see why they are served in smaller glasses. But for anything rich in taste, you only need a few sips or swallows to enjoy the flavor.

My favorite salad at the Prison City Pub and Brewery is Power Salad, with it's crucifeorus medley of broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, beets, sunflower seeds, curried honey mustard and alfalfa sprouts.

Also, if you go out to the Prison City Brew Pub on Tuesdays, you might run into my husband entertaining the crowds with the sounds of his guitar and voice.

If you're into the prison attractions but you are more interested in food, drink, and music, you can visit Swaby's and the Prison City Pub.
